Chilean FlamingoPhoenicopterus chilensis

The familiar pink color flamingos are known for is the result of carotenoid pigments found in the flamingo’s food – like shrimp.

Because they spend much of their time in water, flamingos stand on one leg in an effort to conserve body heat.  They raise their legs more in the winter than in the summer, but have an equal number of leg raises in the spring and fall.

Scarlet IbisEudocimus ruber

The males usually gather nesting materials, which they ritually present to the female.  The females build the nest.  Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the young regurgitated food.

They use their long bill for probing in soft mud and under plants to search for food.

Inca TernLarosterna inca

Inca Terns fish for their food from above.  Their webbed feet are too small to propel them through the water effectively, so they fish for prey by hovering over the water at heights of around 50 feet.  The birds then splash into the water and emerge with their catch.

Inca Terns have a distinctive call that sounds like a cat-like mew or high-pitched laugh, which is often accompanied by bowing gestures.

  • Love this zoo! Great place to get a walk in and the animals are everywhere! The museum/indoor part is very educational too. Has a lot of shade for when it's hot out. Very clean. Friendly staff.

  • The museum gives you a break from the sun on hot summer days and has a great selection of animal exhibits from around the world.  The zoo keeps growing and adding new animal habitats or improving existing ones.  Membership offers reciprocal benefits to other zoos around the country.
