Sioux Falls Zoo & Aquarium (SFZA) was created from the 2023 merger of Great Plains Zoo and the Butterfly House & Aquarium but still operates in two separate locations. However, a bold vision, and a historic fundraising effort, will bring both entities together on one campus through transformational change.

In the summer of 2024, SFZA kicked off the $50 million We Can’t Wait! campaign, that will bring all elements of land, sea, and sky to the zoo campus with the addition of a world-class aquarium, a reimagined butterfly rainforest, and an expanded education center. It will include the revitalization and accessibility for people of all abilities, mobilities, and ages. The additions and updates will improve the quality of life, expand workforce development, strengthen tourism and economic development in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area.

The We Can’t Wait! campaign is off to a momentous start after SFZA received a generous $25 million matching gift from Mr. Denny Sanford. Efforts are underway to raise $25 million in matching funds from individuals, businesses, and other public and private sources. Currently, nearly 90 volunteers are meeting with Sioux Falls business leaders to raise support for We Can’t Wait! through a greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce Community Appeal. As of the beginning of January, volunteers had achieved nearly 55% of the $2 million stretch goal.

Opening of the new facilities is projected for late 2027 or early 2028.
