A World of Education and Exploration

Created from the 2023 merger of two organizations with more than 80 years of combined community presence, Great Plains Zoo and the Butterfly House & Aquarium, Sioux Falls Zoo & Aquarium’s mission is to connect visitors with the beauty of wild species and spaces. But that work is being done in two separate locations. To start our next chapter, we need your help.

With your support, we’ll transform the current zoo campus into a place where families can create unforgettable memories in a world-class setting.

Our revitalization plan includes:
aquarium rendering

A state-of-the-art aquarium featuring a 350,000-gallon shark reef and tunnel experience.

A brand-new butterfly rainforest where visitors can immerse themselves in tropical foliage and a kaleidoscope of colors.

Revitalized exhibits that ensure the highest-quality care and one-of-a-kind encounters.

Apart from brand-new features and attractions, reaching our goal will allow us to renovate and modernize some of our most beloved exhibits and expand programs that are vital to the success of our conservation efforts.

Our Goal

To help bring this vision to life, Mr. Denny Sanford has generously donated $25 million and has asked our community to match his gift. When we reach our $25 million goal, Mr. Sanford will provide an additional $10 million to help us continue our efforts to revitalize and transform our beloved campus.

"The Great Plain Zoo and Butterfly House and Aquarium are shining stars in South Dakota! From quality of life for those of us who live in South Dakota, to visitors from around the world, these two attractions are two of the most “must see” for Sioux Falls. Building the aquarium and Butterfly House at the zoo will elevate them even more in the visitor industry. Children of all ages will experience field trips as learning experiences, families will be able to enjoy the destination with one-stop, and South Dakota will once again be proud of another exceptional attraction for years to come!"

"I've been a donor to the Butterfly House and Aquarium and the Great Plains Zoo for years. It fulfills a vital role in the cultural development of families including young families and the young-at-heart families. Bringing the Butterfly House and Aquarium together on one campus with the Zoo is the right thing to do. I'm thrilled to be a part of Sioux Falls Zoo and Aquarium!"
