Seasonal Educator

General Statement of Duties

An employee in this seasonal position is responsible for general day-to-day coordination and execution of ZooCamp in addition to the general day-to-day supervision of approximately 40 or more teenage participants of the Junior Zookeeper (JZK) Program. The employee may also assist with additional activities relating to the Education Department and Special Events for the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum. This position reports directly to the Education Services Manager.



Maintain an enthusiastic, self-reliant and self-starting approach to job responsibilities and accountability. Strive to anticipate work load and initiate proper acceptable direction for completion of work with minimum supervision or instruction.

Share knowledge with supervisor and staff for mutual and organizational benefit. Contribute to maintaining high morale among Zoo and Museum team members. Develop and maintain cooperative and courteous relationships with Zoo staff, Board Members, volunteers, clients and general public so as to project a positive image and maintain positive relations with Zoo and Museum supporters/guests. Tactfully and respectfully handle requests, suggestions and complaints from other departments and in person in order to maintain good working relations within the Zoo and Museum. Emphasize the importance of maintaining a positive image within the Zoo and Museum.

Education Department

  • Provide superior guest service. Be pleasant and courteous to guests and fellow employees.
  • Teach age-appropriate educational activities and lessons for the summer ZooCamp Program which runs from June through August. Maintain appropriate supervision and safety for ZooCamp participants.
  • Provide day-to-day care and diets as well as daily cleaning of the Hy-Vee Face to Face Farm animals and their exhibits by working alongside JZK participants.
  • Work with the Education Services Manager to ensure coordination and proper coverage of all JZK shifts.  Ensure JZK participants are carrying out duties efficiently and safely.
  • Be trained in the care, routine, and procedures of working in the Hy-Vee Face to Face Farm and caring for the animals housed there. Be trained on the handling of Education program animals to provide excellent natural history and engaging experiences for ZooCamp participants and other Zoo guests.
  • Provide exceptional animal care that meets the standards held by the Animal Care Staff. Follow all instructed guidelines concerning the animals in the Hy-Vee Face to Face Farm and Education Department. 
  • Communicate with Education Specialists to ensure the health and safety of the Education animals and of the Hy-Vee Face-to-Face Farm animals.
  • Aid Education Specialists in training and scheduling JZK participants in their program duties.
  • Work with Education Specialists to complete other tasks as assigned.
  • Work weekends as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Education Services Manager.


Reports to the Education Services Manager


Must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. Experience working with children, teens and/or animals preferred.


  • Must have excellent communication skills and enjoy working with people.
  • Ability to speak comfortably with guests and large groups.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors during various types of weather.
  • Be observant and efficient.

Health and Safety

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must submit to a criminal background check prior to employment. Must be negative on an annual TB test.  Must be certified in CPR and emergency first aid.
